CHENNAI — At 10 AM this morning, C. Joseph Vijay — known professionally as Thalapathy, meaning "Commander," a title earned by dancing on cliffs and defeating 400 henchmen simultaneously in slow motion — was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at Nehru Indoor Stadium.

Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam won 108 of 234 seats. With Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML backing, he commands 120 MLAs. He is the first Tamil Nadu CM since 1967 who belongs to neither the DMK nor AIADMK. This is either the most democratic outcome in Tamil political history or the most cinematic one. Both, probably.

"Vijay must prove majority by Wednesday."— Governor Arlekar, giving the new CM 72 hours — significantly less time than a typical Vijay film climax, which runs 40 minutes and involves helicopters.

Rahul Gandhi attended the ceremony. The DMK, which crashed from a majority to 59 seats, is watching from outside with the expression of a man who trained his replacement and is now watching him use the parking spot. The AIADMK won 47 seats and has said nothing publicly. Their silence is very loud. Tamil Nadu has a new CM. He has signed three government orders already. None of them involve slow-motion walking.
